BRICK - Brick Memorial scored four times in a 10-minute span bridging the first and second period and defeated Red Bank Catholic, 5-1, in a Handchen Cup Tournament semi-final ice hockey game at The Brick Ice Palace on Wednesday night. With the win, the Mustangs advance to the tournament final against MIddletown South, and avenged a 5-3 loss to the Caseys earlier in the season.
The Mustangs were the better team for most of the night, and subdued an RBC team that looked to have great jump in its opening round victory over Monsignor Donovan on Monday. Early in the contest, it looked like it might unfold as a tight checking game, but the Mustangs slowly put a stranglehold on the game, limiting RBC to very few high quality scoring chances.
Brick Memorial got on the board with five minutes left in the first when Adam Person converted in front for a 1-0 lead. A little more than two minutes later, Thomas Lindquist scored a goal that appeared to drain much of the life out of the Caseys, as he shot from the point on the power play and the puck went off RBC goaltender Gavin Gatta into the net for a 2-0 lead.
The Caseys fell behind 4-0 early in the 2nd on goals by Anthony LoBianco and Tyler Person before the Caseys finally got on the board. Mark Powell and Colton Braun were digging away for a loose puck in the crease when line-mate Patrick Dwyer found the loose puck and deposited it to cut the lead to 4-1 with six minutes gone by in the 2nd.
But Tyler Person scored on the power play a minute and a half later to restore the 5-1 lead. RBC had some power play chances in the 2nd, including a 5-on-3 power play for a full two minutes, but couldn't generate the quality chances it needed to cut into the Mustang lead. Brick Memorial played sound defensive hockey the rest of the evening, not allowing the Caseys any life, and finished off the game, 5-1.
Brick Memorial will take on Middletown South in the Handchen Cup Tournament Final. RBC's next action will be a first round NJSIAA state hockey tournament game at Seton Hall Prep.
